Further Exploring
A Film Podyssey would not be possible without the passionate, scholarly work of some very dedicated cinephiles. In all my reading for the show, I’ve built quite the library, but the following books proved to be essential to my research. If you’d like to take an even deeper dive into the world of cinema, they’re an excellent place to start:
• Film History: An Introduction (David Bordwell, Kristin Thompson & Jeff Smith)
• A World History of Film (Robert Sklar)
• Film Style & Technology: History & Analysis (Barry Salt)
• The Oxford History of World Cinema (Geoffrey Nowell-Smith, ed.)
• 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die (Steven Jay Schneider & Ian Haydn Smith, eds.)
• The Film Encyclopedia (Ephraim Katz & Ronald Dean Nolen)
• Film Art: An Introduction (David Bordwell, Kristin Thompson & Jeff Smith)
• The Routledge Encyclopedia of Film Theory (Edward Branigan & Warren Buckland, eds.)
Also, be sure to visit They Shoot Pictures, Don’t They?, where you’ll find a very comprehensive ranking of the 1,000 Greatest Films of All Time, compiled from just about every critics’ list out there.
And don’t miss The Story of Film: An Odyssey by Mark Cousins. It’s a 15-part documentary series that takes you through the entire history of motion pictures. I’ve seen it many times, and it was a major inspiration for this podcast.
